IDAHO’S FIRST ALL ELECTRIC REFUSE COLLECTION VEHICLE

Kuna, Idaho is experiencing significant growth, and for the past 36 years, J&M Sanitation has been the trusted provider of refuse and recycling collection services for this community.

Over the past few years, we have been actively exploring options to transition our fleet of refuse collection vehicles to run on all-electric power, eliminating the need for environmentally unfriendly diesel technology.

Our main objective with this project is to introduce electric refuse and recycling trucks into our J&M Sanitation fleet, aiming to achieve positive environmental outcomes.

In 2020, we reached a milestone by introducing the first two fully electric Class 8 refuse collection vehicles in the state of Idaho, marking the ninth and tenth such vehicles in the entire United States. By 2024, with the addition of two more 100% electric collection vehicles, all residential refuse and recycling collection services in the City of Kuna will be conducted using electric vehicles.

The environmental advantages of electric refuse and recycling trucks are substantial. Operating these electric vehicles will significantly reduce harmful fleet emissions, including greenhouse gases, carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxide, particulate matter, and various toxic and carcinogenic pollutants.

The global trend towards incorporating electric refuse and recycling trucks into solid waste fleets has been on the rise over the past five years, with particularly successful adoption in European and Asian markets.

In addition to transitioning to electric vehicles, J&M Sanitation is actively pursuing the installation of solar arrays and battery storage systems. This initiative will enable us to power our electric vehicles with 100% renewable energy generated on-site, reinforcing our commitment to an eco-friendly approach to refuse and recycling collection in the City of Kuna.
